PJ Flags Off Induction for New Magistrates Grade One

KAMPALA: The Principal Judge, Dr. Yorokamu Bamwine, presided a five-day induction for 16 newly appointed Magistrate Grade Ones.

The induction that is taking place at Judicial Training Institute is meant to equip the new Judicial Officers with basic knowledge and skills necessary for the job. 

The Principal Judge congratulated the group for joining the bench, saying "I am sure you will find fulfillment, purpose, satisfaction and peace in serving this country as magistrates," he said.

He encouraged the officers to inspire public confidence by conducting themselves in a professional and ethical manner.

"The Judiciary will not tolerate acts of corruption, incompetence, drunkenness,late coming, absenteeism, laziness, judicial tyranny and indiscipline of any kind."

The PJ further implored the new Judicial Officers to embrace Alternative Dispute Resolution to expedite trials and humanize the justice system.

"ADR methods such as plea bargaining, Mediation and Small Claims Procedure help reduce on case backlog and make the Judiciary more effective and efficient."

He added, "the future of the Judiciary is in your hands and therefore you should guard it well." 

The Registrar Research and Training, HW Isaac Muwata said the induction is designed to familiarize the new appointees with new duties and also ensure that they are up to date with the developments in legal jurisprudence.

He urged the participants to make good use of the training by sharing their experiences which will equip them for their judicial career.

Some of the topics to be covered include; the structure and functions of the Judiciary, the role and functions of finance administration, management of court stations, case flow and time management, the role of ICT in the Judiciary,effective trial of criminal cases, Judgement writing, and the role of magistrates in the promotion of human rights, among others.

The induction will be facilitated by; Hon Justice David K. Wangutusi, Hon. Justice Lawrence Gidudu, Hon. Justice Eudes Keitirima, Hon. Lady Justice Henrietta Wolayo, the Under Secretary Judiciary, Mr Aggrey Wunyi, Registrar/JudiciaryPRO, HW Vincent Mugabo, HW Gabriel Moses Angualia, HW Jamson Karemani, HWDaniel Bwambale, Mr. Simon Bwire from Ministry of Public Service, Dr. Wilber Turyasingura from Uganda Management Institute and Ms. Norah Winyi Matovu from Judicial Service Commission.
